Rivan Industries

An overview of your company

Rivan Industries are a synthetic fuels company on a mission to make life on Earth sustainable. Our technology converts atmospheric CO₂ into renewable natural gas (RNG), a clean energy source that can help decarbonise heavy industries through the UK gas grid.

This matters because around 30% of global CO₂ emissions come from industries that are difficult to electrify, such as shipping, aviation, and chemical manufacturing.

To remove CO₂ at the Gigatonne scale, we need solutions that are cost-effective and create valuable by-products, like synthetic fuels.

To tackle these challenges head-on, we have developed low CapEx, modular machines that can be easily deployed. Coupling this with utility scale solar energy with an ever-decreasing unit cost, means we can quickly generate significant revenue in a commercially viable and scalable way.

This will allow us to fulfil our ambition of making synthetic fuels cheaper and easier to produce than extracting fossil fuels from the ground.

What do you do on-site?

At the Science and Innovation Park, we are testing our pilot Renewable Natural Gas facility, demonstrating how our system operates when paired with solar photovoltaics.

Our process combines three key technologies:

  • Direct Air Capture (DAC) – Extracting CO₂ from the air using limestone cycling.
  • Electrolyser – Splitting water into hydrogen (H₂) and oxygen (O₂) via electrolysis.
  • Methanation Reactor – Synthesising CO₂ and H₂ into renewable methane (CH₄), a direct replacement for fossil gas.

By using CO₂ already in the atmosphere and powering production with renewable energy, we ensure that no net additional emissions are created, delivering a truly circular carbon economy.

After our initial testing, we plan to scale up and deploy our solution across the UK and beyond.

Why did you choose the Science and Innovation Park for your wind turbine testing?

Swindon has long been a hub of engineering and innovation – from the Great Western Railway’s Swindon Works to today’s cutting-edge technology pioneers. Rivan Industries is proud to continue this tradition.

The Science and Innovation Park stood out to us because of its deep commitment to sustainability and support for breakthrough technologies. Their enthusiasm for innovation, combined with their hands-on support, made it a perfect fit for our first-of-its-kind synthetic fuel pilot project.

If our prototype machines prove as transformative as we believe they will, our hope is that perhaps one day they’ll join the Science Museum Group’s archive alongside the historic inventions housed at the Hawking Building.

What do you enjoy most about being part of the community at the Science and Innovation Park?

The Science and Innovation Park is a hive of creativity and discovery, bringing together researchers, fellow renewable energy innovators, antique car enthusiasts and many more. From day one, the Park’s management team has been incredibly supportive and welcoming, ensuring our move onto the site was smooth and helping us to integrate into this dynamic community.

Their commitment to innovation and sustainability has created an environment where ambitious ideas don’t just stay on the drawing board – they become a reality. We are excited to be a part of a place where history, science and sustainability interact – and to collaborate with others who are equally passionate about pushing the boundaries of what’s possible
